About Andersal – Established 1987

Today

Andersal enjoys a very professional reputation in the industry.

We have a depth of product knowledge and practical experience. Our approach is always to fix the root cause of the problem and provide an economical long term solution.

Andersal completes more than 70 projects (including about 50 strata projects) each year. We have a simple aim: to provide the best waterproofing and concrete repair solutions by recommending appropriate, high quality products in conjunction with objective professional advice.

More than half of Andersal’s revenue is derived from contracted large projects, ranging in size from above one hundred thousand dollars to multi-million dollars, won in open, competitive tender. Success on these projects has been the basis for our continued expansion

Like all good companies our greatest asset is the experience and skills of our staff. Andersal senior staff are appropriately qualified with professional engineering, clerk of works and engineering certificate qualifications

Andersal is proud of its reputation. Our top priority is safety and customer satisfaction. We have had no lost time through site accidents in the last five years. We value and enjoy long term relationships with both consultants and other clients. Much of our business is with repeat clients.

We should never forget our beginnings.

  • Two Civil Engineers, Stuart Anderson and Jim Salmon started Andersal in September 1987. (Stuart and Jim built the competency and professionalism of Andersal before moving on in 2003, all other Andersal staff remained).
  • The rationale was that there were many concrete repair problems and this market niche should grow.
  • There were of course many challenges and some wants that are humerous with hindsight.
  • The first job was Holdsworth Ave Greenwich. This was the next door neighbour. Quote $12k increased to $18K but the neighbour was a good sport and paid the lot. The job still looks good. The big learning was not to trust rates given in trade Cost Guides, which gave rates for very large jobs. Stuart was consulting at the time so he ‘supervised’ during his lunch hour.
  • The second job was an old apartment block at Queenscliff. The quote was $1800. Jim and Stuart were labourers at the weekend. The finished job looked pretty lousy so the owner only ever paid half.
  • Another early job was at Newport for roof repairs. Unfortunately one of our staff put his foot through the ceiling above a stove where the owners were cooking. It was a hell of a mess. The job was quoted at $700 but it cost Andersal an extra $3k to repair the roof and ceiling.
  • Initially Stuart & Jim advertised and worked as both Consulting Engineers and concrete repairers. Waterproofing was added later. Consulting Engineering dropped off because the work volume was small.
  • An early incident in the first years occurred at Freshwater Beach where Andersal was contracted to repair the swimming pool. A worker was using a nail gun. The nail gun ricocheted of the concrete and hit a co-worker in the chest. He collapsed into the water and the white water washed him out to sea, all in slow motion. He survived. So did Andersal!
